Galicia is a historical and geographical region of western Ukraine, which also included territories once inhabited predominantly by Ukrainians.
Nadsyanie and Lemkoshchyna.
There are several interpretations of the territory of Galicia. The name "Galicia" comes from the city of Galich - the capital of the Galician principality.
From the second half of the 13th century, the city of Lviv became the political and cultural center of the region.
Galicia had both its own statehood - the Principality of Galicia, and was part of different states.
Due to the partial liberalization of national policy in Austria-Hungary after the “Spring of Nations” of 1848, Eastern Galicia became the center of development of Ukrainian and Polish culture, literature and science, while sub-Russian Ukraine pursued a policy of harsh Russification and discrimination against Ukrainian culture.
Therefore, Eastern Galicia received the name “Ukrainian Piedmont”.
